"You've got a friend."
--Carole King (1942- )
The Friends of the South Huntington Public Library support library programs and services. One of our main
beneficiaries is the annual Summer Reading Program, which attracts hundreds of young readers each year (right).
Money donated to the Children's and Young Adult Departments
is used to purchase books that are given as rewards to youngsters who complete the program.
The Friends also help out on the day of the annual library budget vote by providing
refreshments and sponsoring a raffle for those who vote. Past prizes have included a DVD player,
a television, a Playstation 2 video game system and Friends' tote bags filled with books.
The grand opening of the new library in July, 2004, was supported by the Friends as well.
The group donated funds for a lovely continental breakfast that was served to the approximately
300 patrons, staff, trustees, elected officials and other guests who attended the ribbon-cutting and
dedication ceremonies (left).
They also contributed to a special reception to thank staff members, the architect,
and others involved in the building project. In addition, the Friends hosted a gathering
to thank the more than 200 people who purchased bluestone engravings through the
Donor Recognition Campaign.
